A Few Facts…Swedish

  • Spoken by about 10 million people mainly in Sweden and Finland.
  • Swedish is closely related to Norwegian and Danish and is mutually intelligible with them to a large extent, particularly in its written form.
  • Finnish and Swedish have equal status as official languages in Finland.
  • The letter Q was eliminated from Swedish spelling in 1906. K is used instead, except in proper names.
  • In modern Swedish, Z only appears in foreign loanwords.
  • A large number of French words were imported into Sweden around the 18th century; most of them are distinguished by a "French accent", characterized by emphasis on the last syllable, and quite recognisable to a French-speaker.
  • As with many Germanic languages, new Swedish words can be formed by compounding; making very long, and sometimes quite impractical, long words such as: “produktionsstyrningssystemsprogramvaruuppdatering”
  • The Swedish alphabet is a 29 letters long: basic 26-letter Latin alphabet and three additional ones Å, Ä and Ö.
